Is Your Dog Really 49 in Human Years?
Published Apr 13, 2026 · 6 min read
The popular "multiply by 7" rule is a myth. A 1-year-old dog is sexually mature and more like a 30-year-old human. A 4-year-old dog is roughly 53 in human years based on new research.
The New Formula
Human age = 16 Γ ln(dog age) + 31

Age Comparison
| Dog Age | Old Formula (Γ7) | New Formula |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 7 | 31 |
| 2 years | 14 | 42 |
| 5 years | 35 | 57 |
| 10 years | 70 | 68 |
| 15 years | 105 | 74 |
Dogs age rapidly in their first 2 years, then slow down. The new formula captures this non-linear aging pattern using epigenetic clock data.
Size Matters
Large dogs age faster than small dogs. A Great Dane at 7 is roughly equivalent to a human at 65, while a Chihuahua at 7 is more like 50.
