How to Estimate Drywall

Measure each wall: length × height. Add all walls together, then add ceiling area if needed. Multiply by 1.1 for 10% waste, then divide by the sheet size (32 sq ft for a standard 4×8 sheet) and round up to the nearest whole sheet.

Example: a 12×10 ft room at 8 ft height with ceiling = wall area 352 + ceiling 120 = 472 sq ft × 1.10 ≈ 519 sq ft ÷ 32 = 17 sheets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I subtract for windows and doors?

For a quick estimate, no. The extra material covers waste from cutting. For precise ordering, subtract opening areas and add 10% waste separately.

How much does drywall cost?

Standard 1/2" 4×8 sheets cost $10-18 each (2024). Moisture-resistant runs $13-22. Fire-rated 5/8" is $14-25.
