Overtime Rules — U.S. Federal Baseline
Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees must receive 1.5× their regular pay for all hours worked beyond 40 in a single workweek. Some states have daily overtime laws too: California requires 1.5× after 8 hours/day and 2× after 12 hours/day. Note: salaried employees classified as exempt (executives, professionals earning over $684/week) are generally not entitled to overtime.
How to Convert Minutes to Decimal Hours
Payroll systems use decimal hours. To convert, divide minutes by 60: 7 hours 45 minutes = 7 + (45/60) = 7.75 hours. The table above shows the most common conversions. When summing multiple shifts, add decimal values first and convert back only for reporting.
